Bottle opener with magnetic top catch

Posted by Steven Vacher

Hi all,
I’m Steven I’m an amateur woodworker who enjoys tinkering around in the workshop as it’s completely different to my day job.
My brother-in-law inspired this project as he had a bottle opener on his kitchen wall the trouble is every time he opened a bottle the lid fell on the floor. I decided I could make something a little better.
I started off by picking a piece of oak though I had in my offcuts pile, I ripped this twice and inserted two strips of western red cedar.

These were chopped down to length, I knocked the corners off and put a chamfer around the top and bottom.

I applied three coats of Danish oil lightly sanding between each coat.

Three coats of polyurethane varnish were applied again sanding between each coat. The final coat was sanded with 1200 grit sandpaper. I then screwed the bottle opener to the front, and routed out a slot on the back for the magnet.

Here’s a video of it working.

If you like it, and I hope you do head over to Instructables where there is a further rundown on how it was made and the steps.
